To commemorate Australia hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the RBA is minting three new-look $2 coins. One of them has a cartoon koala on it who loves to surf. Oh dear.
The limited-edition coins entered circulation on March 14 exclusively through Woolworths Supermarket tills. There are three variations featuring the 2018 Commonwealth Games emblem, the Australian Team logo and the fun-loving koala Borobi.
For those who missed the memo, Borobi is the official mascot of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. He is described as a “vibrant blue” koala who “loves to surf.” He also has his own theme song.
“Borobi is the perfect mascot not only for the Games and this coin but also for encouraging participation in sport which ultimately brings communities together, improves our health and celebrates Australian culture,” Sports Minister Greg Hunt said about the coins.
We would argue he is Australia’s answer to Poochie from The Simpsons.
In addition to receving the coins at Woolworths, keen collectors can pick up a commemorative set from the Royal Australian Mint gift shop for $15.
The collection comes with the three aforementioned $2 coins, plus five exclusive $1 coins depicting sports and para-sports from the Commonwealth Games. Personally, we think these look a lot cooler, so it’s a shame they won’t be entering circulation. The Borobi coins, on the other hand, can die in a bushfire.
